Why 2D?

Hello fellow gamers. I’d like to discuss some of our design decisions in making our first game. Specifically why we are doing the game we are currently developing.

Background
Our first game we are working on is a 2D scrolling shooter. Our main goal with it is just to create a fun experience for users that will bring back memories of games such as Contra. Because let’s face it, those games were a ton of fun to play. So now let’s see how we came to this decision.

Decisions, Decisions
We are a team of three developers. Each of us has to wear many hats in getting a game done. We each have many strengths so it works well for us. For example, I handle coding, audio, and very little art work. My main duties are the “behind the doors” coding, such as physics, collision, etc and dealing with some of the audio. As building a game has many, many tasks we all have many roles; none which is any more important than the other.

While our skill set includes programmers with 3D knowledge, it currently does not include a 3D modeler. When faced with the prospect of learning a modeling tool and the time it would take versus being able to put together a 2D game in that same amount of time the decision was an easy one for us. We were going 2D.

In Conclusion
We chose to go with developing a game that we already have the skills for. This does not mean that we will not be doing 3D games in the future but, for our first venture we wanted the only learning curve to be the one where the team has to get acquainted to working with each other. As we have 3D experience, expect one of us to learn to model or that we will add a fourth person in the role of modeler in the future but, for now our beta of our first 2D game should be ready in the not too distant future.

  • Qbit stands for Quantum Bit Games
  • We are a small indie game development team
  • We are currently hard at work on our first game, which we are creating using the Microsoft XNA Game Studio
